Whether you’re a sole trader or manage a fleet, insurance can be one area where savings can be made.
When it comes to insurance, the model and spec of the van you choose can impact the premiums you pay. Looking at which insurance group a vehicle falls under is one way to get an idea of how much it will cost to insure.
Let’s look at some of the cheapest vans to insure that you could be driving as your next commercial vehicle.
What are insurance groups?
Every vehicle on the road is assigned an insurance group. These are bandings running from 1 to 50 whereby the lower the number, the cheaper that vehicle generally is to insure.
There are other factors that can impact your premium as well:
- Driving History
- How you store the vehicle
- How many claims you’ve made previously
- How the vehicle will be used
How are insurance groups decided?
Insurance groups are determined by a group rating panel, made up of members of the Association of British Insurers and the Lloyds Market Association and supported by Thatcham Research.
The panel looks at factors like vehicle values, parts costs, repair times, overall performance, security and safety features for various specs of every vehicle model to assign them a number – which is then used by every company providing insurance for vans in the UK.

Insurance groups: 5 to 16
Popular for its space maximising features that help defy its small van dimensions, the Peugeot Partner comes as either a single or double cab. It’s powered by a range of punchy diesel engines, though the impressive all-electric version might have more appeal for some businesses. A clever through-loading bulkhead means almost the Partner’s entire body length is put to good use, yet three adults can still be seated comfortably.
Insurance groups: 14 to 22
Available in Panelvan and Doublecab variants depending on the number of seats you’re looking for, not to mention a cost efficient fully-electric edition, the Vivaro is a popular medium van. It comes in two lengths that determine how much space you’ll get in the rear, with a through-loading option on hand to help you get the most out of its 4959mm or 5309mm. Fuel economy is good and well within reach of similar sized vans around today, while the cabin’s hard wearing finishes make it sturdy and suitable for all kinds of jobs.
Insurance groups: 21 to 50
One of the most versatile vans around, the Transit is the backbone of many UK businesses. Offered in an array of roof heights, lengths and wheelbases, you’ll also get your pick from Standard, Kombi and Double Cab variants depending on how often and how many passengers you carry on your daily duties. You’ll even get your pick between front, rear or all-wheel drive, meaning the Transit is ready to handle whatever you need to throw at it.
Insurance groups: 17 to 28
The reliable Mercedes Sprinter finds itself among relatively low insurance groups. That could be in part thanks to its raft of industry-leading safety features, which include, but are not limited to Crosswind Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane-Keeping Assistance. The model bares all the quality finishes you’d expect from a Mercedes-Benz, no matter whether you choose the 3-seater Panel Van, 5 seater Crew Van, or opt for one of the specialist conversion models – with tippers, dropsides and Luton box vans among them.
Insurance groups: 14 to 24
One of the larger commercial vehicle on the market, the Volkswagen Crafter builds on the success of the T6.1 Transporter model. That means it’s still a leading choice when it comes to storage solutions, safety equipment and comfort enhancing touches in the cabin, but instead you’ll get a super-sized load space that rivals the LCVs market’s biggest.
